OMG! I am soooooooooooooooooooooooo tired. Class was horrible. Well, actually, it started out being kind of fun, but by the end it was painful. Way too much up and down and up and down. I don't like 3 hour long classes. Especially after being there all day long. I wanna curl up in a ball and never move again.

And I totally got in an heated debate about which is harder, Gold Award or Eagle Scout. He threw me off a little in the beginning just by knowing what the Gold Award was; seriously, nobody's every heard of the Gold Award. (Not saying it's right, but it's true)

I hate it when things that should be really simple end up so complicated. I like simple yes-no type answers. Why do people always have to end up saying and/or doing something to push it across the line?! UGH! It's just so frustrating. I hate the awkward positions I seem to always end up in, and then having to make decions that could potentially hurt other people. (I'm used to the hurting me type decisions, but I don't like to hurt other people) ARGH! It's just so frustrating! Oh well, I guess that's life.....

Meanwhile, my pile of homework just keeps growing and growing. Now with subbing (I survived my first two days!!!!!!!!! :-D) I'm not entirely sure how/when I'll ever get it all done. I think I'm gonna have to start learning to say no. My current plan was to take any sub jobs I can get, but I don't think I'll be able to handle that mixed with my homework.

I still haven't decided what I'm going to do about school over the summer. I think that I will either take no classes, or maybe just the one technology class. I want to be able to actually have a summer. I need to be able to work and save up some money. I need to have time to have a life, be with friends, etc. I just don't like the idea of spending my entire summer in school. Monday-Friday 8-4 every day stuck in a classroom.... it just doesn't sound all that appealing to me. The problem is that then I have no idea where that puts me with what to take in the fall and when I'll be finished with the degree. It'll completely screw up my schedule if I don't take full time, so I have to talk to Dr. R about that soon.

My mom and I are going on a bus trip to Savannah with Girl Scouts. (Not my troop, a bunch of other scouts though) It sounds like it's going to be A TON of fun. I'm really excited about it.

Facts I've discovered

- My house is an igloo
- I hate writing research papers
- I hate the fact that it takes me longer to find a parking space at school than it does to drive to school
- I am very organized person and therefore cannot function when something is not orgnaized
- Going a week wtihout a shower sucks big time
- Cuddling is absolutely amazing
- I get extremely cranky/bitchy when I'm tired
- When I'm cold (which is most of the time, let's face it) the best way to warm up is to curl up with a good guy
- Being happy isn't so bad afterall

I am actually happy. I don't remember the last time I felt this content..... It feels weird.... This is not normal for me and it keeps catching me off guard to be legitimately happy when I wake up in the morning.... and to seem to actually have a reason to get up in the first place.

So I have mixed feelings about the whole UB thing. I guess it's okay, but definitely not nearly as good as Fredonia. I miss being able to get out of bed 10 minutes before class starts and still get there early. I hate that I have to go to school at least half an hour early just so that I can get a shitty parking space that's miles and miles away from my building.

However, I love my professors. My classes themselves suck for the most part. Boring junk that I'm only taking because they're required for my major (only reason ANYONE takes any of these classes.) Though I get to go to the ECRC twice a week to "teach" music with the Frog, Bunny and Kangaroo classes. That's amazing. Everything else is just eh. But the teachers are great. I have all the doctoral students really. Most of my classes (15 credits) are listed as being taught by my advisor, but she isn't actually teaching any of them. The one class is being taught by 4 people, so that'll be interesting.

The other thing I'm doing is helping out my advisor and two doctoral students on some publication thing they're doing. I have no idea what I'm doing, but my name will be listed as an editor, so that's cool. I've spent 8 hours working with them so far and I still don't know what the topic of the publication is.... is that weird?

I need to come up with a topic for my research paper for my intro to research class. She says it needs to be something we're really passionate about. My problem is that I've come up with a ton of ideas, I'm just not passionate about any. I change my mind almost everyday (if not every few hours) about what I want to do it on. Unforturnately I need to have a specific purpose and 3 problems narrowed down by Thursday.....

Other than that, not much going on in my life. Still waiting for Fredonia to finish up the stupid paperwork so that I can "graduate." Funny how my graduation date is listed as December 19 and they still haven't completed my transcript or anything. It sucks. Most of the sub lists won't even take my application until I have that transcript and/or my certification. I hate how slow Fredonia is with that crap.

[ mood | happy ]

So I've been playing in the Williamsville Community Band all summer. Mr. Cool (my high school band teacher) was the director for the band, which made it all the better. I was having fun at rehearsals with the rest of the oboe section (there were five of us.) Three of them are high school students, and the other is an old guy who is some kind of doctor that was always at least half an hour late to rehearsals. But rehearsals were fun, talking to the others and what not.  Our concert was last night at Island Park.  The concert is always supposed to be outdoors, weather permitting. It rained a bit in the afternoon, up until around 5ish, but when the concert started at 6:30, we were outside. The grade 5-9 band played first. Three pieces that were nice. Because we were playing outside, I had borrowed Mrs. Ohsiek's oboe (there was NO WAY I was going to play Sophia outdoors!) so that helped me not care. It also meant that I couldn't sound too great cuz I haven't played on a plastic oboe since I was a junior in high school and all my reeds were made for my horn. Oh well, it's a community band with students entering grade 10 through and including a lot of adults who only really play for the summer band. It wasn't too bad during the younger kids concert. But as soon as we started our first piece, the wind picked up! We had clothes pins to hold our music down.... but they never work. I was sharing a stand with Karen, and we were playing off of photocopies which meant that the music was on normal size sheets of paper. On a regular music stand, the music has to be up off the stand in order to clip it down, and you would only be able to clip the top, not the sides.... This made for a very amusing time. Especially on the pieces when you only had 2 or 3 measure page turns where you needed to reclip everything.  But this concert was amazing. I don't remember the last time I had so much fun playing music. Last night reminded me how happy I used to be when I played.... before college completely turned me off to music. I still don't know if I want to teach music; maybe student teaching will help. But I was so happy playing, and I can't wait to go back next year.

I am also going to try to play in the Amherst Community Band during the year, which is along the same difficulty level. I was asked to play bassoon, so it should be A TON of fun, as I pretty much suck at bassoon, but love to play it, so I'll be motivated to practice.  The only thing holding me back on this plan is actually getting my hands on a bassoon..... Mr. Cool told me last night that he'll try to find me one; I have to call him next week. Hopefully one of the schools will have an extra one I can rent for the year. It should be a ton of fun.

Meanwhile, I'm guarding the rest of the summer at Charter Oaks where I am absolutely miserable about 90% of the time.....

We're closer now than ever before
There's love in our world and we're showing it more
Our world says, "Welcome, stranger."
Everybody's a friend
Favorite stories don't end
In our world

Some say our world is getting too small
I say, with kindness, there's room for us all
Our world is always changing
Everyday's a surprise
Love can open your eyes
In our world

When night lays sad upon you
Go watch a simple sunrise
Love can open your eyes
In our world

I really wish there was a soundtrack to that movie.... but alas, there is not.... I must resort to playing the movie over and over again to listen.....

Roberta Guaspari is coming to campus! This probably means absolutely nothing to non music people. But it is AMAZING! She is actually a Fredonia Alumnus (I didn't know that before) but she moved to Harlem and started teaching music in a school with innercity kids, etc. and faced a lot of problems. The movie "Music of the Heart" or something to that extent is about her. I saw it on tv a year or so ago and absolutely loved it! And apparently she's graduated from Fredonia!!! And she's coming here! Unfortunately, she is coming next weekend and I won't be able to see her. I have High School Musical at Lancaster Opera House on Friday evening. It's the junior event for the neighborhood, and my mom and I planned it, so I kind of should be there. And then Sunday is mother's day, so coming back to Fredonia Saturday for the thing with Roberta would be stupid cuz I'd have to go back home for Sunday. Oh well. I am going to the screenings of her movies, though.

I had scouts last Friday and it was a blast! OMG! My mom wasn't there, so it was just me and the girls. And it ended up only being three of the girls. They started their mother's day present but we also did some badge requirements. Hehe. Here we go.... One of the requirements was to learn about fuses and circuit boxes. No problem! I know where our's is at home, and I know how to use them because I use the one at work over the summer for the pool lights. So I bring the girls into my messy basement, and explain about circuits and fuses and whatnot. I didn't want to flip any because I didn't really feel like resetting a million clocks in my house. But there were two or three switches that weren't labeled, so I assumed that they weren't attached to anything. I was wrong. I flipped one and the basement went pitch black! The girls screamed and then we all started laughing. I didn't want to just flip it back because at that point I had moved my hand and didn't want to flip the wrong one. This is the point in the story where everyone always asks if I brought a flashlight. Well, that's the ironic part. The badge requirement we had done about 10 minutes prior to going in the basement was learning how to fix a flashlight. Simple repairs: change batteries, change a bulb. Not much to it. I could only find one flashlight at the time. The rest were all buried with our camping gear. Well, in the process of teaching the girls how to change the bulb, I broke it..... therefore we had no flashlight when we went into the basement. We had a blast! OMG! It was great. I eventually figured out by feel which switch to hit (it was the only one facing the opposite direction) It was a great meeting.

OMG! It is absolutely GOREGOUS outside!!!!! :-D I cannot wait to go out and just sit outside and probably read because I don't wanna ruin the goregous weather by throwing any form of homework in there. No way, reading my "fun" non-school related book instead.

I'm going bowling with Eliza and two of her friends this afternoon. It should be fun. I haven't been bowling in.... well.... I don't remember the last time I went bowling.... was it really senior year when I was on the varsity team??? I have no clue! Not entirely sure how my arm will be with it, but, eh, it's not as though I have to play my instruments for three hours straight later this evening.... oh wait..... I DO!

I'm staying at school for the weekend which is the first time in quite awhile. I'm skipping a scout meeting, which I don't actually want to do, but I have my dress rehearsal. My band concert is Monday, so dress rehearsal is tonight 7-10. Dress rehearsal on a Friday night..... that totally sucks! But what can you do?!

Yesterday was Eliza's birthday. We did rootbeer floats again, like freshman and sophomore year. (Didn't last year cuz it was her 21st so we went out to BJ's) And this year we didn't even make a mess!! We remembered to put the ice cream in FIRST so that you don't splash the rootbeer all over the place when plopping it in..... yeah, we're smart. But we were pretty neat.... Only the table got a little sticky because we left the ice cream out and open with the spoon laying on the table. That, and I got a little of the foam on the table. I'm smart, and in an attempt to get the foam to go down sooner so I could add more rootbeer, I blew on it, and instead of going down, it sprayed everywhere. But it was fun. She loved the shirt I got her.  The whole 'Life is Good' stuff, well, there's 'Life is Crap' and they're absolutely hysterical! I got her an "Out of Coffee" one and she liked it, so I was glad. That was only half the gift, but the other half isn't here yet. I think the other half is better, but we'll see. And the shirt came in a box shaped like a little t-shirt. It was GREAT!

I think I'm gonna have a bunch of people over sometime Saturday or Sunday to do a mini sno-cone party. I restocked on syrups, so we should be good to go. And I don't actually have anything to do during Sat or Sun. I did pick up a shift at the pool Saturday night 7-10, but that still leaves me A LOT of free time with not much to do.

YAY!!!! GORGEOUS WEATHER!!!! Okay, I'm out of here to go chill outside because it is totally a sin to be inside when it's so nice outside. YAY!

I DID IT!!!! [01 Mar 2008|10:20pm]
[ mood | relieved ]

So, it's over! And I survived!! From what I've been told, I did really well. Doc said it was the best I've ever sounded. That was really good to hear because, to be honest, when I was on stage playing, I wasn't really impressed. I guess I'm still too harsh a judge.... But I made it through alive and people said I did great. I was so happy to see all my friends and family here to see me. It made me feel that little bit less completely alone on stage. I'm SO GLAD that Sarah played with me, and her parents were really happy that I "let her." I knew all along that I wanted her to play on my recital with me since she couldn't have her own. I was just really glad that her parents made it out here to hear her.

But I am so glad that it's done and over. It went well, and that's a huge relief. I can't wait to get the CD and DVD to watch. See what it looked/sounded like from the audience. I was too busy shaking and crying on stage. (Yes, I actually started to cry every time I had to walk back out on stage.....) But it's over, I have a few of my posters and programs to remember it by, in addition to the recordings, obviously. I'm still shaking a bit from it, but I'm sure that'll go away eventually, I hope.... And the crying.... still ridiculous amounts of it whenever I think about my recital, but, eh, whatcha gonna do?

But.....   I DID IT!!!!

A day and a half left...... [29 Feb 2008|12:03am]
[ mood | calm ]

I'm meeting with Dr. Fronckowiak (evil new oboe lady) tomorrow at noon for final reed help before "the big day" as she calls it. My dress rehearsal last night went pretty well, minus my lack of a good reed. I rehearsed with Mark again this afternoon, and he looked at some of my reeds, the three that I got from Dr. F on Wednesday. He made them easier to blow and made them sound significantly prettier. I don't mind Dr. F's reeds, but I feel more comfortable on Mark's because I'm used to his and know what to respect. Dr. F's are extremely different in the high register and I couldn't (still can't) figure out how to adjust for it. Anything above a G5 is completely unstable and I just couldn't get it under control.  I currently have 2 reeds that I would feel comfortable playing on at my recital, and another that works as a back up reed. It plays easy enough, and it's in tune, it just doesn't sound quite as pretty as the others. I'm still going tomorrow mostly because I would like to have more back ups just in case.

Other than that, Friday is OBOE-FREE!!!!! I need a day to completely forget about my recital and everything associated. I have B&A from 4:30-10 (no dinner break!!! ugh!) so that'll help. I can also get a bunch of my homework (reading especially) done that I haven't had too much time for. I need to especially hunker down and get at least the stuff due Monday done.

Overall, I'm feeling pretty good right now. It definitely comes and goes. My stomach has been kind of queasy, but I've decided that it's just nerves. Jacquie gave me a back rub tonight and omg do I feel better. My mom picked up my dress today, she says it looks good. All of the food (which there will be WAY too much of) is baked and/or ordered. My thank-you gifts are bought, I just need to write 3 more thank you cards and I think I'm gonna grab one more starbucks card for Sarah's boy friend because he's being amazing and videotaping it for us. (I was a slacker and didn't get the paperwork done in time for the school to tape it for us.) Sarah won't let me pay him, so I figured I should at least get him a Starbucks gift card like I did for Sipkje and Laura. Pretty much, though, everything is set and it just needs to happen.

What's gonna happen will happen. I'm as prepared as I can be and if I don't know it by now, I won't by Saturday. But I feel fairly confident about all of the pieces. (I kept screwing up big time at rehearsal today on one movement, but I've never done it before, so I'm hoping it was just a freak accident.) Now it's just the matter of resting up, finding a good reed and just getting out on stage and playing.......

I am actually cleaning my room!!! OMG!!! Like, dusted already and have intents of vacuuming and everything. OMG! I must be sick!

But I rolled my desk chair over my baby toe and now the nail is bent at a 90 degree angle and it's bleeding and it hurts.... :-(
That ought to make wearing heels fun!

"Lesson" today went pretty well, I got 3 reeds that are good and in tune, and one more that plays well but is a little sharp, but not so bad that I can't just cheat and pull it out a bit in an emergency.

Dress rehearsal this evening should go well. (Except I still haven't gotten confirmation that I actually have the hall for tonight.... oh well, I'm going anyway!)

Seriously though, my toe really REALLY REALLY hurts!!!!!

But I did laundry and put fresh sheets on both of my beds (I only would have changed the one, but the sheets I wanted for the other was the set on the "couch" bed) and it's amazing what kind of difference it makes just making a bed. As soon as the bed's were made all neat, my room looked 10 times cleaner! And then I even opened the blinds and it got even "cleaner"!!! It's like magic!

Seriously, I don't think my toe could possibly hurt anymore than it does right now.... I think I'm dying!

My mom just called to see what the weather was like here. I said it was cool and a little wind. (Not even enough to make the leaves on the ground blow.) Apparently there are white out conditions at home, though. Dad doesn't want me driving home in this. (I normally wouldn't argue.)  But NYSSMA is this weekend and I was planning on going home for scouts tonight, then driving to Rochester bright and early Saturday morning to be there by 8:30 or 10:15 depending on weather, then spend the night visiting Katie at Nazareth, go to church with her and her new boyfriend (I'd be the first family member to meet him!) and then drive home and back to school on Sunday. Now all of that is up in the air. I have to wait and call dad when I get out of chorus at 4 to see how the weather's doing. Their other worry is whether I can get back on Sunday cuz it's supposed to be bad then, too.  I really want to go to NYSSMA. I haven't made it at all yet, and my methods grade could really use the help of it, too. 25% of our grade is what she calls "toolkit points" where you can earn up to 100 points doing extra things. The semester is over and I'm only at about 40 points.... NYSSMA is worth up to 5 points for each workshop you go to, and I would have made it to about 4 or 5, so that's a lot of points I'll be missing out on...

I HATE WNY WEATHER!!!!
